This has become a bit of a family standard and I have never yet found the same recipe online - they're all slightly different. The cake is lovely and dense from the soured milk and intensely chocolatey because of the chocolate and cocoa powder. It's from a St Michael (as in M&S) book called something like "Chocolate", making it pretty difficult to Google.

This recipe can definitely take some abuse - we always had Flora at home and never real butter, we weren't big fans of sieving, and we would have used the microwave to melt chocolate. I don't recall if we ever made the praline (I doubt it), certainly I don't remember bothering to split the cake often, let alone to three layers! The icing I think we must have made at some point but since I learnt that ganache is super easy I usually smother it in that instead - a one-to-one weight ratio of dark chocolate to cream - though the less said about my adventures with white chocolate ganache, the better.

The quantity conversion is a bit suspect, everything's rounded to the nearest whole ounce or 25g. I've made this most successfully in grams so I'm inclined to stick with them, though I'm sure we must have followed the Imperial measures at home as that's Mum's habit.

Cake:
250ml / 8floz milk
1 tbsp lemon juice
125g/4oz plain chocolate, broken into pieces
125g/4oz unsalted butter or margarine
250g/8oz caster sugar
2 eggs
300g/10oz self-raising flour
1tsp bicarbonate of soda
2tbsp cocoa powder

Filling:
150ml / 1/4 pint double cream
1 quantity almond praline (from elsewhere in book - this might be a good substitute)

Icing:
250g/8oz plain chocolate, broken into pieces
125g/4oz unsalted butter
200g/7oz icing sugar
5 tbsp milk

Grease and line a 20cm/8" round cake tin. Mix together the milk and lemon juice. Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl and leave over a saucepan of gently simmering water until it has melted.

Beat together the butter and sugar to soften, in a large bowl. Add the eggs and beat in. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda, and cocoa powder into the bowl and mix well.

Add half the soured milk and beat well. Stir in the melted chocolate and remaining milk and beat until smooth. Turn into the prepared tin and level the surface.

Bake in a preheated oven, 160c (325F), Gas Mark 3 for 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 hours or until well risen and a skewer, inserted into the centre, comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin.

Split the cake horizontally into 3 layers. Lightly whip the cream and stir in the praline. Use to sandwich the layers of cake together. Place on a serving plate.

Make the icing. Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl with the butter and leave over a saucepan of simmering water until melted. Stir once. Remove from the heat.

Add the icing sugar and milk, and beat until smooth. Leave the icing until cool enough to hold its shape.

Using a palette knife, spread the icing all over the top and sides of the cake. Scatter with chocolate curls and serve dusted with icing sugar.

This is essentially my attempt to bring Grillstock home. We may not have the ridiculous barbecue apparatus (or the weather & wood chips for operating it) but we do have a slow cooker and access to CostCo's meat section.
Our beef had a not-so-successful earlier incarnation - after 8 hours of cooking (5 low, 3 high) it was definitely done (by sight and internal temperature) but was nothing like the tender falling-apart texture I was hoping for. We had some for supper anyway and it was pretty tasty with barbecue sauce (if a little tough), but it was the extra 12 hours overnight that turned the remaining beef into what we'd hoped for all along. I can't really give guidance on cooking time but for our 2kg rolled brisket it was definitely more than 8 hours and up to 20.
Tonight we ate the soft beef with leftover slaw on Tesco brioche burger buns. N had some Jack Daniels barbecue sauce on his - I didn't think it needed it as I'd reheated it in the juices/gravy/non-icky-accurate-word so I just added slaw to mine.
Smashed together with reckless abandon from Tom Kerridge's Pulled Beef Brisket In A Milk Bun and BBC Good Food's Pulled Firecracker Brisket

Beef:
2kg rolled beef brisket, string removed, fat-side up

Under, at the bottom of the slow cooker:
olive oil, 2 red onions in thin slices, 6 cloves garlic, 2 red chillis with holes stabbed in them, splash of worcester sauce, generous splash of red wine vinegar, few drops lemon juice, star anise, dried coriander, dried marjoram, fresh-ish thyme
300ml good quality beef stock (we used a whole Knorr stock pot)

On top, sprinkled and rubbed:
Smokey chipotle paste, double concentrate tomato paste
Coriander, cumin, mustard, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, fennel seeds, black pepper, brown sugar, sweet smoked paprika, paprika. Quantities roughly as reference recipes.

Cooking:
We did 5h on low, 3h on high, 1h dinnertime fiddling, 11h on low. Then I removed the beef from the pot and pulled it apart. We stored the beef in one tupperware and the liquid in another. These went in the fridge for ~10h, then we removed the layer of congealed fat from the liquid.

Serving:
For our sandwiches we reheated some beef in some of the liquid in a non-stick pan, then allowed the liquid to reduce to what would stay mostly inside a roll.
Ingredients:
Cabbage: half a small white one
Carrot: one large
Coriander: ~35g
Lemon juice: half a lemon's worth
Paprika: 1/2 tsp
Black onion seeds (nigella): 1 tsp
Greek yoghurt:100-150ml

Directions:
1. Find a decent sized bowl - we used a 1L pyrex one after the prettier one turned out to be too small
2. Slice cabbage & carrot into small ribbons, preferably using a mandolin. Grating the carrot works but the result can be a bit mushy
3. Slice the coriander finely and put it in the bowl with the carrot and cabbage
4. Sprinkle on the black onion seeds and paprika, stirring about to spread them
5. Add lemon juice and stir
6. Add yoghurt gradually and stir until everything is nicely distributed, add enough to give a thin coating
First thing's first - this would probably be a very tasty bowlful
without the chorizo and it is easy to omit. However if you are a chorizo
fan I hope you will appreciate this very excellent way of cooking it - it seems to stay "juicier" (ew) and more distinct than if it were allowed to sink into the stew.
I don't know what the definition of a chilli is really but
spicy stew sounded a bit clumsy so here we are. I've left the
ingredients as what I used with notes, some things are definitely not
vital e.g. the radish. I also had three somewhat squishy half-frozen
baby plum tomatoes which went in but I don't think they made a huge
difference to anything.

For the smush:
One avocado
Juice of half a lime
Small bunch of corriander (cilantro) leaves, chopped

Smash all the above together with a fork and a pinch or two of salt. Set aside.
(the lime juice should prevent the avocado from going brown if that's a concern for you)

Pre-oven

For the cornbread:
112.5g cornmeal (I use polenta as that's what Sainsbury's has)
70g flour - I prefer cornflour in this but wheat works
1/2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
284ml soured milk (270ml milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice) or buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
1 green chilli, sliced into rings (remove seeds unless you like hot)
optional sprinkling of sweetcorn

Grease a shallow ~11.5cm cake tin*.
Combine the dry ingredients in a decent sized bowl, then make a well and gradually stir in the milk followed by the beaten egg. Stir in the corn if using.

Pour the mixture into your prepared tin and scatter rings of green chilli across the surface.
Bake at 230C for 25 minutes until set and golden(er) on top.

This is a bastardised version of this recipe. I made it without the onion once and didn't miss it.
I can confirm that it freezes well, just sprinkle it with water before re-ovening.
* I use an enamelled cast iron tatin dish. Using something metal here helps a crust form underneath, I've not tried ceramic but I imagine longer cooking at a lower temp might be required.

For the White Bean & Chorizo Chilli:

1/2 a chorizo sausage ring cut into fat slices
1 onion or few spring onions, sliced
3 cloves garlic, sliced
stick of celery (I used the tiny bits from the heart as that's what I had)
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 1/2 bell peppers (I used yellow & red for sweetness)
handful of radishes, sliced
large bunch coriander, divided into leaves and stalks, both chopped
1 red chilli, sliced into rings (seeds to taste)
1 tbsp chipotle chilli paste, I've used Waitrose and Discovery brands
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp coriander
1 tbsp tomato paste
300g tin cannellini beans, drained
~50g spinach (mine was frozen) - kale would be a trendy substitution

Heat deep pan nice & hot and fry the chorizo slices until they're browning on both sides and have oozed a fair amount of orange fat. Scoop them out and set aside. Now turn the heat down a little and add the onion, garlic, celery, and seeds and allow to soften. Add the peppers, radish, coriander stems, chilli, and chilli paste. Allow all this to soften up until you have a fairly smushy panful with the peppers retaining their structure. Stir in the cinnamon and coriander. Then the tomato paste and beans. Allow all this to cook down for a good while before adding the spinach.
Towards the end incorporate the corriander leaves and the chorizo slices. Make sure this all gets nice and hot together.
Serve the chilli in a pasta bowl with a edge of cornbread and a good splat of the avocado smush.

Enjoy!
My Mum grows courgettes and apples so from August until the damn things die off we're inundated with them. Now I live away from my parents the effect on me is lessened but I still get the occasional vegetable delivery.

ABC stands for Apple-Banana-Coconut, which is the version I made for Ceilidh & Warwick's party but this recipe is pretty adaptable:
- I've used courgettes, apples, and carrots individually and in mixtures and they all worked fine.
- Walnuts are the classic choice of nuts but coconut works surprisingly well
- Dried cranberries or other fruit make for a sweeter & more exciting cake
- It's quite easy to turn this vegan as the only non-vegan ingredient is the eggs. I've made it several times successfully using flax eggs - one egg = 1tbsp ground flax (golden linseed) + 3tbsp water.
- I usually use brown sugar for the flavour
- C&W version had ~1/2tsp each of cinnamon, nutmeg, & ginger instead of the 1tsp of cinnamon
I picked it out originally as the amounts of butter & sugar are slightly less horrendous than other brownie recipes. If you cook these for the recommended time they'll come out squishy, but cook a bit longer and the result will be cakier. These can also be made in small cake format - bake them as you would fairy cakes and check for done-ness earlier.
I often use chunks of chocolate or dried fruit (cranberries especially) instead of nuts. I also go heavy on the cocoa as it really does help the flavour. I've had good results using dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and a mixture of both.

Possibly the smallest afghans I've ever made.

I've just realised that despite posting several photos of them on Flickr over the years (1, 2), I've never actually posted the recipe for Afghans. Yes, it's a strange name for a biscuit but they're completely ubiquitous in New Zealand. Afghans are a kind of chocolate biscuit with cornflakes in. They contain no eggs and aren't overly sweet. It's a very particular taste - a surprisingly good combination of dry-ish biscuit, chewy cornflake, sweet icing and walnut.
We discovered them on a family holiday in 2003 and searched for a recipe for ages, trying the few versions we could find on the internet with limited success. One day I realised that they featured in Mum's favourite old battered Penguin Cookery Book from the seventies which was written by Bee Nilson, a kiwi. We've been making that recipe ever since and they're pretty much spot-on.
My copy of the Penguin Cookery Book was found in one of the many St Peter's Hospice shops here in Bristol and is even older - the last date printed is 1965 and it has mould spots!
So, without further ado, here's the recipe:

Afghans
Cooking time 20 minutes. Temperature 350F, Mark 4, ~180C.
Allegedly makes 2 dozen, although we tend to make about 8 larger ones.
7oz melted butter or margarine (1 c)
6oz plain flour (1 1/4 c)
3oz sugar (6 tbs)
2oz cornflakes (2 c) - non-Kelloggs work better here. Kelloggs are too thin and melty
1oz cocoa (3 tbs)
1/4 tsp salt
Vanilla essence
1 doz shelled walnuts - a.k.a. 24 halves, I wonder if they came ready-shelled in those days?
Chocolate icing - refers to another recipe in the book, but I'm sure you can figure this one out

Mix all ingredients together and put in small spoonfuls on an ungreased tray. Bake until firm. When cold drop a blob of icing on top of each and press on half a walnut.

There you go! Nothing fancy at all. Perfect with a nice mug of coffee or possibly a kiwi-esque flat white (or flit whaite if you must do the accent.)Dichohechohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14531475574269492154noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6285620735785012905.post-81517779426139711822011-08-27T00:06:00.002+01:002011-08-27T00:09:21.872+01:00See No EvilLast week the whole of Nelson Street in central Bristol (UK) was shut off for a rather exciting project. Nelson Street is normally dull, grey and a bit manky - it's home to several nightclubs, a derelict magistrates court and the back of the police station - but someone had a good idea.
Bristol is well-known for its street art scene and Inkie, a local, brought the city council and street artists from all over the world together to brighten the area up. The whole thing was called See No Evil.
I missed the street party that accompanied the finishing of the project on Saturday, as well as the temporary boards which had been painted on, but what's still there is pretty awesome. I went down on Sunday and took a load of photos, so here they are in a neat slideshow.

More photos will eventually end up on Flickr but I don't see that happening for a while yet.
You don't want to see those anyway, there are loads of great ones over on Flickr.
There's a dedicated group, the Bristol group and Swishrelic's set, then there's the ever-awesome F***YeahBristol tumblrlog, and the project's own website.
The faff I have allowed myself is over at dichohecho.tumblr.com where I've been posting a picture a day (or as often as I manage) from my Flickr (which is also lagging a bit). I thought I should probably post something on here since Jess linked me :)

So, I shall try and keep this more updated; never mind that the last photos I posted were from September, I'll start afresh.

He's an Iford Sporti 6 and makes square pictures on 120 film. In Niall's words the English Holga (well English company, they were made in Germany). He works a lot more reliably than a Holga though, no wrapping him up in electrical tape to avoid light leaks, plus a choice of apertures!

Of course he still has no metering so I have to guess (or use my ME Super to meter) but *so far* I've managed alright. Being a Sporti 6 rather than an earlier version he has double exposure prevention, but I don't mind too much. I've got my Lubitel(assuming it works) for that!

Oops.

I hastily made up some more and chucked it in and carried on, for the stop & fix I just used the smaller amount and agitated it more than you're meant to. One of my favourite buildings in Bristol - just a fantastic colour ; Tasty lunch from the genuine Italians in St Nick's Market, eaten by the river in Castle Park ; A little bit of eccentricity in the midst of the concrete mass of Broadmead.
Rustiness & decay, countryside style ; A view to make me nostalgic - the Somerset Levels ; Bringing the outside in - hops from the hedgerow with added wildlife.
A gaggle of geese (or ducks?) at the house of RWA artist Lucy Willis who does the most lovely watercolours, with a liberal amount of Venice. She has a great way with light. Mum & I visited her house when it was open as part of the Somerset Art Weeks.Dichohechohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14531475574269492154noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6285620735785012905.post-15407850289864265932010-12-03T12:34:00.001+00:002010-12-03T12:34:16.272+00:00.Dichohechohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14531475574269492154noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6285620735785012905.post-22822195171084787972010-11-20T14:53:00.000+00:002010-11-20T14:53:03.674+00:00Hestercombe II

This has been a while coming, but here's the next installment of new camera at Hestercombe, yay!

See my previous post for some explanation of what Hestercombe is. There's a house and gardens but the house is private. The gardens are split into two parts; the landscaped valley and the formal terraced garden. I've been there plenty of times as it's near my house but Niall hadn't so we explored pretty thoroughly.

On the day we were there there was a "family" event going on. This meant that on one of the lawns there were a few stalls selling "gifts", a Punch & Judy show, a falconry display(with uncooperative birds), and a tent full of tasty local cheese, cider & similar products. We enjoyed the latter the most...

There are lots of walls like this

An old mill with a waterwheel

A swan in the mill pond

And pretty views.

Landscape gardens are generally cleverly built so that there are lots of constructed views. My September was spent revising, hanging about at home and preparing to come back to Bristol. I was still using my sister's old camera & not taking many photos.

Wandering around Clifton having a break from revision on a sunny afternoon.

Baking, the perfect form of procrastination.

And way of killing boredom when stuck at home.

My older sister and I were at home at the same time and we all went to Kilve beach. I seem not to have taken any photos of the actual beach (except maybe on film)

But there were pretty trees, I do love a pretty tree.

And a nice overgrown industrial relic...

That was a strange sort of jumbly post but it fills in some gaps. My *new* camera arrived in mid-September so no more Kodak CX7350 from here on in! (hopefully)
It's a shingle spit just off the coast of Suffolk. And by just I mean just, the boat journey takes about a minute! You can see in the google map:

So why did we drive all the way across the country to see an island? Well, it has an interesting history: As well as being an exciting geographical phenomenon (it's made of shingle which has many rare plants growing on it) it's got some interesting history and it shows. The whole island was acquired by the MOD years ago and used for secret military testing during WW-s I & II, lots of which involved dropping bombs on it! Later on, during the cold war, there was an Atomic Weapons Research Establishment base where detonators and bomb casings were tested. Apart from that there's the "Cobra Mist" site where experiments leading to RADAR happened. Now the BBC World Service and a Dutch station are broadcast from there.
Anyway, up until 1992 or so(?) the entire place was under the Official Secrets Act and the public didn't know what went on there. Since then it's been looked after by the National Trust, who open it to the public under the title of nature reserve! There are still restrictions on where you can go, mainly to stop you a) disturbing rare plants & destroying their habitat b) having a derelict building fall on you c) being blown up by some of the tonnes of unexploded ordnance that is probably in the midst of all that shingle! The paths are well marked...

After a 6am start & the final leg of the journey, we reached Orford, parked the car and bought our tickets in time for the 10am boat. Unfortunately they'd miscounted
and we got bumped off and onto the 10.20 boat (and called us Mr & Mrs Wold!). Oh well. The jolly boatman took us across at 10.20 and a nice lady on the other side sold us a guidebook with a map in, showed us what was open and told us about boats back; you have to get off the island by a certain time or you're stuck! The lady who sold us the tickets takes the names & phone numbers of all the visitors so they know exactly who's there.
So we set out and walked all over the place, down every possible path & around every building. The weather turned lovely and many photos were taken, by the end we were well-exercised and even slightly sunburnt!

Of course, when the sun came out so did the slide film! It's the Velvia 100F which I'd cross-processed before. Sadly it seems that my ME Super is metering oddly as all of these came out rather dark and under-exposed. Also the purple tinge is probably due to my own cack-handed scanning; I'd been taught how to scan black and white negatives and didn't think to alter the colours as I scanned my slides. Yes, I'm a n00b.
Just walking down the lane I see loads of lovely trees and flowers and rolling countryside that really puts Bristol to shame. Urban trees can be a nice relief from general concretey greyness and leafy garden-y areas can be pleasant, but nothing beats being surrounded by green with only the sounds of songbirds (plus the odd tractor) in the air.

Bit fanciful? Maybe. But look:

All these photos were taken on my Pentax ME Super on Fuji Superia X-Tra 400.
For more ramblings see my Gone For A Walk! set on Flickr.Dichohechohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14531475574269492154noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6285620735785012905.post-50007377387238009372010-09-23T09:46:00.005+01:002010-09-23T21:57:47.905+01:00Cornwall & SouthwoldAfter the excitement of the balloon fiesta I drove the 200 miles from Bristol down to Cornwall to join (most of) my family in a somewhat isolated farmhouse near St Just in Penwith. My parents are slowly working their way round the South West Coast Path and were taking the opportunity to do a bit more.
Still being hampered by the rubbishness of the borrowed camera I didn't take that many photos, but I managed a few!

On the nicest day we went to the beach at Porthgworra. It's in a little cove and the beach is split in two by a sort of outcrop which has tunnels through it. One side is made of lumpy rocks and the other is a steep slope down which boats would be launched (if there were any). It's a decently pretty place and wasn't horrendously busy, although there was a fair queue to get pasties when they arrived at the tiny shop.
My sister and I tried swimming but we got in up to our middles and decided that it was far too cold; it also smelled disgusting, probably because of a sewage outlet pipe, and it got worse as the tide went out. Oh well.
Mum, Dad and I scrambled over rocks along the beach a bit and got to the end of the cove before being forced to stop by an impassable sort of gulley in the rocks. We did spot some cormorants though!

Not the beach but never mind.

On Grandma's birthday we went to Falmouth as it was raining lots where we were. We had lunch in a sort of church tea room and had a look at some art and some charity shops (one of which had a massive collection of 35mm compact film cameras).
Before heading home we went out near the castle and had a look at the view. I spotted St Anthony Head, which Niall and I visited when we were in Cornwall (blog post here)

It was strange seeing it from the other side, and with my family.

There were *loads* of boats.
That evening we took Grandma to The Gurnard's Head which is a pub in the middle of nowhere. It's only really a pub in that it looks like one from the outside and has a bar. Otherwise it's a really really good restaurant. I didn't take any photos of the food as that would've felt a bit rude but it was *so* good. There was wonderful warm homemade soda bread and butter to start with, then I had:
- pea & goats cheese risotto with crispy pancetta, toasted almond flakes and pea shoots
- Plaice with homemade gnocci, cherry tomatoes and samphire
- Some kind of chocolate pudding I can't remember the name of

One day I shall try and recreate that risotto. I'm not a huge fan of almonds but it really worked; there was just the right amount of cheese in the risotto, enough to be tasty but not so much that it was overpowering; the pea shoots were lovely and delicate but had a surprising amount of flavour. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.

Anyway! The rest of the week was largely rainy and Mum & Dad went walking a bit while I revised for my retake, K researched tigers for her fancy project qualification thing, and Grandma snoozed in an armchair.

On the Friday we set out for home, theoretically around a three hour journey by car. Mum & K were going via Rosemoor to see the William Morris exhibition we'd missed previously, and I was going with Dad & Grandma. I was intending to go straight on up to Bristol for sometime after 4pm so I was happy when we left without mishap at 10.45. Then it all went wrong.
The traffic was absolutely horrendous. After maybe an hour Mum & K broke down and we had to go back to help them (the car was overheating from sitting in traffic jams). Luckily they'd broken down at a former Little Chef which was now a Starbucks so there were at least toilets and coffee. There wasn't much wrong with the car so we gave it a drink adn a chance to cool down and went on our way. However the roads were still completely jammed up and we didn't reach Bodmin until around 2pm.
After getting badly lost in Bodmin and an unsatisfactory lunch of pie crust and chips we pushed on to Exeter, where I decided to take a train, arriving at St Davids Station around half past three. I must have just missed a train to Bristol as there wasn't another going for around an hour. I had a fairly open ticket so I jumped on the first one to Taunton for the sake of keeping moving, and after changing at Taunton, I arrived at Bristol around half past five. So that wasn't a fun day of travelling.

Anyway, well done if you've read all of that. The point of me going to Bristol was so that Niall could take the two of us to Orford Ness the next day. We had dinner at his house before driving to his parents in Bedfordshire to stay overnight. We got up at 6am and completed the journey, arriving at Orford just in time to be miscounted out of the first ferry of the day.
Once we got across we spent a lovely day exploring the island, much of which is still off-limits due to unexploded ordnance. It's a really fascinating place and well worth a visit. I've got plenty of film photos coming and Niall wrote about it rather nicely on his Tumblr, but until then this is the sum of my digital photographic efforts there:

Impressive, eh? Think of it as a teaser.

Having walked many kilometres and caught the sun, we went up the coast to Southwold where we had supper at The Red Lion. Then Niall went off homewards and I stayed the week with my Granny, being joined by (3/5 of) my family the next day. Again, not many photos were taken, and those that were were mostly family.

After Southwold I returned to Bristol to go into revision exile for the week and a bit before my exam. I left the house infrequently, and mostly to go to Sainsbury's.

Spotting some inventive parking on the way.
I also made it to a Photosoc pub meet, which was a very pleasant relief from the Mathses.

Enough! Facepalm moment. Luckily my flatmate L was scheduled to arrive about half an hour after me, so I arranged to pick her and her twin up from the coach station so I could get in.
While I was waiting I could hear meowing, so I went to investigate and met this little chap:

He was sitting on the pavement meowing at anyone who went past and seemed very pleased when I went to say hello. He wove in and out of my legs and rolled about on the ground, and when I moved my foot suddenly he tried to grab and bite it! I put it down to playfulness...

That afternoon L, R and I took an exciting trip to big Sainsbury's, and I unpacked all the junk I'd brought up with me. My room looks much more homely now!
Later on we met some other people for tea (as organised by the lovely Jith) before heading down to see the nightglow at Ashton Court. (via the blackberries of Clifton)

It was very crowded and there was a huge chavvy funfair, which isn't exactly my thing, but it was fun for photos and the balloons were rather nice.

On Friday evening I went to the Square Sessions in Queen Square with Niall and Alex among others.

The music was decent too, but it was just a nice atmosphere lying around with nice people and nice cider. Niall (1 2) took some nice photos which sum it up pretty well. I could've sworn Matt did too but I can't find them!

On Saturday I had arranged to have a tea party at my house at 4pm. I got home later than I intended and baked rather panickedly. Luckily L & R are amazing bakers and made sparkly brownies and pink cupcakes, the angels! While I was hurriedly makeing whoopie pies in a saucepan on the coffee table in my bedroom and ordering Alex about, my friend C from home arrived with her boyfriend (J). She'd come up to see the balloons and I cruelly had her make cucumber sandwiches.
After lots of faff and flouryness various other people arrived, I made a big pot of tea, and we ate cake. Jith, Josh and Tom made something rather interesting. It was a small iced sponge cake with Hello Kitty's face on top, perched atop a lemon cheesecake. It was magnificent.

(Couldn't find a version without the cat... I have strange friends.)

After the tea party C (and J) and Niall and I decided it was too wet and miserable for the night glow (the 6pm ascent had got rained off) so we got an Indian takeaway and went to The Jersey Lily (a pub on Whiteladies Road) for a quiet drink instead.
The next morning we had brunch at Deco Lounge (shocking extravagance with the curry as well) before C & J went off for a day in Bristol and I ran away to Cornwall.Dichohechohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14531475574269492154noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6285620735785012905.post-76321196620823126892010-09-13T15:28:00.005+01:002010-09-13T15:44:34.894+01:00August ThingsOur garden in the sun

Sweet chestnut leaves, a rose and pink hydrangea flowers.

Things I like

The cat who isn't ours but wants to be

Homemade Afghan biscuits

Amazing old photography book

A collection of little things (click through for annotations)

Wheeeeeee!
